Playhouse 2 is a century old, ex-cinema converted to a theatre by the membership in 1966. Since the theatre's construction, ongoing maintenance has been carried out, but major refurbishment was just a longed for dream.

The National Lottery seemed like the answer to our prayers, and so an ambitious scheme was put together and submitted to the local arts board. However in common with so many other similar voluntary groups, the demands of the Lottery conditions and the need to raise a huge sum for our contribution, beached our original ambition and led us to take a different more measured tack. We still intend to carry out the refurbishment, but in instalments.

Phase 1 - Making the building watertight
1998 saw the complete re-roofing of the building, and construction of a new facade, we also installed a new sound mixer.
Phase 2 - Refurbishment of the Auditorium
1999 saw the re-decoration of the auditorium and the replacement of the seating and carpets, re-painting of the outside of the building and replacing the lighting control equipment.
Phase 3 - Refurbishment of the Front of House facilities
2000 saw the re-building of the bar and coffee lounge areas, a ground floor foyer with box office and cloakroom was created, and new toilets were constructed. Major remedial work was also carried out to the floors and walls.
Phase 4 - Refurbishment of the Back Stage facilities
When money is available, we will commence the final stage of refurbishment. Rebuilding the much neglected Back Stage areas used by the actor and stage crew.

Funding for this work is raised primarily by ticket sales, bar sales, raffles and hiring the theatre to other groups.
